Dampness in houses can cause one of three things, all of which is serious.

Continual wetting and drying of the soil can cause ground swelling and shrinking which, in turn, can cause upheaval of the footing supporting the walls of the house. This can contribute to cracking in the walls.

Dampness in houses can therefore impact on the structural integrity of the wall and can make windows and doors hard to open or close. Plumbing pipes can fracture and leak. It can also allow weather penetration into the building if the cracks are large enough.

Then there is salt damp which is rising damp that brings the salts from the ground with it. This can eat into the structure of the wall, be it the bricks or the mortar, or both.

Rising or alt damp should be treated by an expert contractor.

Finally damp conditions are conducive to promoting termite activity. And everyone knows what they can do.
